THE BIRMINGHAM PUB BOMBINGS 1974: RESUMED INQUEST STARTING THIS WEEK

THE BIRMINGHAM PUB BOMBINGS 1974: RESUMED INQUEST STARTING THIS WEEK

KRW LAW LLP represent ten of the families of victims of the Birmingham Pub Bombings 1974 in the resumed inquests into the deaths of their loved ones.

This week, after almost five years of campaigning, fundraising and legal applications and argument, the inquest into the deaths of the 21 victims of The Birmingham Pub Bombings are to resume.

This is an important week for those represented by KRW but will also be a day of sadness. This week marks the start of a minimum five week hearing at which material evidence will be adduced andwitness evidence will be heard by a jury in Birmingham, a few minutes’ walk from where the twobombs exploded.

Those we represent continue to have concerns:

  • Why has the scope of this inquest been narrowed exclude the issue of the perpetrators?
  • What can be achieved at the end of this inquest for them and the community they live in?
  • Why have they had to battle for public funding in order to obtain independent legal representation in order for them to effectively participate in this inquest?
  • Why are they still concerned at the level of disclosure of material provided to the Coroner by the Government?

Nevertheless, after 45 years, throughout which these families have been excluded from any investigation into the deaths of their loved ones, this week marks at least an opportunity to ask some of questions that have haunted them for years.
