KRW Law Statement on Today’s Announcement in Court of the death of Soldier C in the ongoing MRF Prosecutions

KRW Law Statement on Today’s Announcement in Court of the death of Soldier C in the ongoing MRF Prosecutions

At today’s hearing in the ongoing prosecution of MRF soldiers, it was formally announced that Soldier C has recently passed away.

The prosecution includes the prosecution of Soldier F for the murder of Patrick McVeigh and the prosecution of Soldiers B, C and D for attempted murder in a separate incident the day before the killing.

Speaking outside of the Court, Solicitor for the family, Gary Duffy said:

“The family of Patrick McVeigh welcome the fact that, after more than 50 years, criminal proceedings are finally underway against members of the MRF. It is a moment of deep significance for the family, who have endured decades of pain and fought tirelessly for truth and accountability.

However, the confirmation today of the death of Soldier C is deeply troubling. It highlights the very real risk that justice may be lost to time if these prosecutions are not progressed with urgency and efficiency.

This development has caused considerable distress and concern. It serves as a stark reminder that time is not on the side of justice. The death of Soldier C underscores the urgent need for these prosecutions to be advanced swiftly and efficiently. Delays risk denying the McVeigh family the full measure of justice they have fought so long to achieve.

The family calls upon the relevant authorities to ensure that the legal process proceeds without further obstruction or delay. Justice delayed is justice denied, and after more than 50 years, the McVeigh family deserves closure.”
